Child Counselling and Art Therapy Melbourne

Friendly, kind and caring therapist for children and teens

If your child has gone through emotional trauma, struggles with school or has challenging behaviour, child counselling could be the help you have been looking for. It’s normal for children and teens to feel uncomfortable talking to adults, especially ones they don't know well. As a Melbourne based Child Therapist, I am trained to talk to children in a way that creates trust and helpful relationships. As well as using fun and creative strategies to connect.

How can child counselling and art therapy help?

As a child therapist, I understand how to explain big emotions to children and teens without them feeling bad or damaged. I also know that for children art and creativity is a great way for them to be able to express themselves and engage in the therapeutic process. Some mental health issues that I can work with your child on are:

Generalised Anxiety Disorder
Children with anxiety can suffer from physical symptoms such as a racing heart, nausea, not wanting to go to school and trouble concentrating.
Depression
Depression in children is characterised by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, negativity and guilt.
Attachment Disorder
An attachment disorder impacts a child’s ability to form normal, healthy attachments to loving adults.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
PTSD is the reaction to traumatic events such as abuse or a life-threatening accident or event.
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)
This is the most commonly diagnosed mental health issue in children. It is also the leading contributor to learning challenges.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Children with ODD may be violent and aggressive, ignoring reasonable rules from parents.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
OCD consists of a child having repetitive intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and behaviours (compulsions)
Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are one of the most damaging mental health issues for children. Even a recovered child can experience a lifetime of issues.

Why Child Therapy?

We sometimes believe that childhood is a time of ease and fun and forget that a child could be struggling with mental health issues. But in today’s world children are facing more stress than we realise.

The demanding academic environment, bullying, unspoken anxiety and their inability to communicate their feelings to adults are all causes of stress for a child. And unfortunately, many people dismiss mental illness as bad behaviour, moodiness and normal childhood challenges.

Children are vulnerable to nearly every affliction adults face. Child therapy involves behavioural assessments and therapeutic interventions to uncover the underlying causes of challenging behaviour. For some children it can be hard to express their feelings in words, this is where my art therapy sessions for children can make a big difference in creating a safe space for a child or teen to open up.

As a therapist, I understand that all behaviour has meaning. I work closely with those involved in the child’s life to identify any triggers and factors that cause or aggravate certain behaviours. As a result, I am able to help children reach their full potential for happiness.
